Maintain global supply and demand models to proactively anticipate trade flows, ship size demand and market outlook for Thermal and Coking Coal.

Responsibilities

  • Build a structured framework for and stay abreast of SnDs of key origins and destinations for coal, identifying bottom up demand and supply drivers.
  • Build a structured understanding and monitoring of policies, market data, news, weather and conduct research to identify key trends and shifts that impact Coal trade flows in the short, medium and long term.
  • Continually working with a scenarios mindset, handling uncertainties via proactive scenario building and communication.
  • Daily and weekly update of market prices and arbitrage calculations, suggesting areas of improvement and driving the analysis to a higher level.
  • Proactively communicate with relevant desks and analysts in both structured and informal manner on analysis of assigned commodities and on queries from trading desks.
  • Drive continuous improvement in analysis or communication thereof, propose and lead projects to automate and systematize the analysis, reducing manual work and raise the bar on understanding Coal as a driver of dry bulk freight.
  • Develop and update Coal supply and demand models and monthly SnD discussions, meeting relevant deadlines for input to freight models.
  • Engage with external market contacts regularly on a global basis and proactively channel insights to business.

Job requirements

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Masters Degree in Economics, Finance, Computer Science or Applied Science. Highly numerate.

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in Coal Market fundamental analysis in a trading, shipping or other relevant business; with emphasis on deep knowledge of China and preferably also India market.
  • Understanding of Indonesia coal policies, grade splits globally and power plant preferences using VIU calcs a clear differentiator
  • Deep understanding of power, cement and other end use sectors a plus.
  • Wide industry network in Coal highly preferred.

Technical and soft skills

  • Strong working knowledge of Excel, Powerpoint a must.
  • Genuine passion to turn data into actionable intelligence
  • Ability or willingness to leverage python and adapt to new technologies and tools necessary.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and team spirit, but also abilty to lead on their own.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts/logic in simple, synthetic and non technical terms to business audience.
  • Commercial flair in order to engage with analysts and traders; identify business needs and translate them into relevant solutions in terms of systems, models and market analysis.
  • Self motivated, resilient and independent individual; objective and critical thinker.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in adapting to changing business needs requiring broader commodity focus beyond coal.
